2d design/ harmony/ Balance/ Gradation

the next two Principles of 2d design are Gradation, Harmony, and Balance.
Gradation: is the gradual change of a subject's element( see previous blogs for the elements) from one form to another. This can be big to small, mechanical to calligraphic, brilliant to faded. Gradation gives depth to a picture.
Harmony  deals with similarity of the elements and techniques . This includes things such as color, shape, and size. Like in Music, all the parts must work together to create one complete composition. This can be accomplished through Gradation of Texture, color, shapes. This can be seen in the much referenced partial painting example of Sea turtle cove- below.
Balance deals with symmetry and Asymmetry. think of a weight and fulcrum. If the objects are equal  in distance and size they are said to be symmetrical. This concept can be achieved however, by using a smaller object with a greater weight further out on the fulcrum. how does this apply to 2 dimensional art? Objects can have more " weight" in a composition by using intense value, texture, color, size, shape, or direction.
Asymmetry is accomplished by placing uneven weighted objects on either side of the fulcrum.

Notice how the texture gradate from very textured and defined in the front to smooth and blended as the picture goes back, also notice how the colors gradate from vivid in the foreground to greyed out in the background and shapes become less defined. In addition to this notice that this part of the painting is unevenly weighted to create Asymmetry. All of these factors put together create Balance and harmony.
